Art-deco in modern kitchens

The gorgeous, lavish, sparkling and stunning Art-deco was over before it had a chance to go into full swing. After it took a start in 20’s, it was over when World War II started. The first revival was in 60’s, when some of the features came back. The second revival started around 15 years ago, and then came Great Gatsby, and now I am seeing more and more Art-deco features in modern kitchens. So if you feel a little nostalgic about the times you never lived in, well, join the club and let yourself be inspired by that gorgeous era!

The distinguishing features of this style are simple, clean shapes with streamlined look. And that relates closely with contemporary clean and simple shapes. While modern might be a little less decorative, Art-deco vibe finds it’s way into modern space, making it more adorning. Geometric or stylized ornaments of last century turn into geometric tile and light fixtures. And to me, it provides a perfect balance between somewhat cold modern furniture and opulent Art-deco.

Modern kitchen with Art-deco vibe.

With jade, silver, ivory, obsidian, rock crystals and, of course, gold and silver as main colors and textures, options for design solutions are endless! Ivory glass, gold hardware and light fixtures provide just enough contrast, especially with darker cabinets, to create a gorgeous and luxurious feel to the space.

Textiles of the era feel at home in the modern kitchen also: velvet of all colors on island stools and chairs and semi-transparent drapes lend softness to the clean lines and statement colors, balancing it out and adding a little romance.

If you are not ready to introduce the color pallet of art-deco, go with shapes and keep it symmetrical. The thing about art-deco is that even subtle and simple details added to the design, create a whole new feel of the place.

Use of art deco in modern design create beautiful variations on the theme that combines the modern affection for clean lines and crisp details with rich gold and gem colors for a stunning effect!

But if you are ready, go all in and let it shine!
